Custom margins for extended printing🖨

While printing images or other texts using word, you cannot have the image extented to the full length of the page.

To avaoid this, we can use the custom margins option under layoutto adjust the margin width, which reduces these gaps.

The standard settings like narrow moderate can also be used, while for maximum coverage of the page, we have to use the custom margins and then edit for the length, height, etc.

Handling your easychair account!

The best part about easychair is that it is sooo very easy to operate and also allows us to make corrections to files, abstract, authors and even the title. SO lets see how:

Login into your easy chair account via https://easychair.org/account/signin.

After logging in, you can find 5 options:

Conferences: This page shows conferences you have been involved and enrolled through EasyChair.

CFP’s(Calls For Papers): The EasyChair Smart CFP  service allows users to publish conference calls for papers and calls for participation and calls for contributions to journals, book chapters and other kinds of publications.

Preprints: Preprints are a version of a scholarly or scientific paper that precedes formal peer review and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. You can add or create newer pre prints in that section.

Slides: Easr Chair creates a virtual platform for publishing all your presentations at conferences, seminars, tutorials, schools and also presentations you are using for teaching in its platform so as to make it accessible for all. (Similar to slide share)

From your registered conferences, Click on the author to get to know more details. If you are just registering, then you will have to fill up the details of all the authors, the corresponding author(your guide), the abstract is to copy pasted and not as a file. On going inside, you will see somthing like this:

To view further details, click on the search symbol and once inside, you can modify anything you want- authors, abstract, paper file, anything.

To edit anything in the abstract or tiltle go int the update information at the right hand corner. Here, you can directly edit the title or abstract or keywords and then click the update information box below.

To update the authors, click on the update author in the top right corner. You can add new author by clicking on the top right corner and also re order the exsisting ones.

To update the file, click the Update file and IN the screen that follows click choose file, and update the file.

Easychair- A must have account👨‍💻

EasyChair is a conference management system that is easy to use and has many features to make it suitable for various conference models. It is currently probably the most commonly used conference management system.

A wide array of events ranging from small workshops with around 10 submissions to big conferences having thousands of submissions use this platform. All together EasyChair hosted about 79,700 conferences and serves arount 3 million users.

Why easy chair?

Having a EasyChair account serves either ways, to participate in events also to get to know about them and to help organise and conduct one. Easy chair was actually designed to help conference organisers to cope with the complexity of the refereeing process. The current version supports

  1. management and monitoring of the program committee;
  2. sophisticated and flexible management of the access of PC members and referees to papers and conflicts of interests;
  3. automatic paper submission;
  4. paper assignment based on the preferences of PC members;
  5. list of the latest events;
  6. submission of reviews;
  7. sending email to PC members, referees and authors;
  8. monitoring email;
  9. online discussion of papers;
  10. the author rebuttal phase, when the author can respond to the reviews;
  11. preparation of conference proceedings
  12. generation and publishing of conference program
  13. generation of conference brochures with program
  14. conference program and proceedings on flash drives

To create an EasyChair account you should have a valid email address and do the following.

1.pass a captcha to prove that you are not a robot;

2. fill out a simple form with your personal information;

3. follow the link sent to your email address to complete the account creation.

Schemcon

The “Students-Chemical Engineers Congress”(S-CHEMCON) is also an annual flagship event of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE). The 16th Annual Session of Students’ Chemical Engineering Congress, SCHEMCON 2020, will be organised by the Students Chapter of IIChE, Chemical Engineering Department, Kongu Engineering College, Erode, Tamil Nadu under the aegis of Coimbatore Regional Centre, IIChE on 11 and 12 September 2020. The abstract submissions starts in the month of march.

During the event various scholars, professors, industrial experts and students across India share their research experience and get to know each other. The event focusses mainly on students and scholars below the age of 35.x It is a wonderful platform to advance your skills, get to know about research topics, explore newer tech. The event has merits by its own ways and being a part of it, is itself a great credit to oneself.

Here are some of my experiences of participating in chemcon 2019.

The first updates are rolled out in the month of February in their official website. Keep looking for updates regularly and try ton stick to the deadline. Keep you abstract ready to update in easychair or sometimes in their page it self. You can refer to my posts on creating and handling your easy chair account from below.

Easy chair is a EasyChair is a free web-based conference management software system used, among other tasks, to organise paper submission and review. EasyChair is widely used, since 2002, in the scientific community, with reportedly more than two and a half million users in 2019. Make sure to have an account in it.

The selection of abstract is intimated by the end of august. They usually dont send a mail to tell you that you are not selected. But you can very well contact them to get more info by phone, as they dont respond well through mail. They decide- if you have to present your abstract as a paper or as a poster. They also roll out the designs for both of them. Generally, this is how it looks, you can modify a bit and deviate from the prescribed design while making the poster, but its not the case for paper presentation(for which I participated). The paper has to strictly adhere to their prescribed conditions.

The 16th edition of Schemcon in 2019 was organised in STRICT-Ankleshwar, and was attended by about 300 students all around the country. There were about 100 paper presenrtations and 40 posters. Prizes are awarded for the best paper in each session and best poster in this conference. There were also plenary lectures by top subject and matter experts with loads of information. The event occurs for 2-3 days with time for exploring the place.

Be well prepared with your presentation or posters as the people attending will have a lot of questions about it. You will have pay for the accommodation and registration separately, food is complimentary. We also got to the visit the Statue of Unity, the Worlds Largest Statue and also visited the UPL factory in ankleshwar as part of the event. We took the navjeevan express to reach ankleshwar, which is a 20 hour journey from chennai(where I live). The college is about 20 kms from the main station of ankleshwar in a place called Vataria. It was a great experience to travel through the dark and deserted roads in the night. One can also experience the greatness of the river Narmada and also the temples on its shore in Ankleshwar. We also got to taste the Great delicacies like chat items and also the gujarati thali. The place was famous for black metal jewellary and also for groundnuts.

It was an awesome experience and one should never miss a chance to attend these kind of conferences where we have both fun and knowledge gain.

Chemcon

The annual flagship event of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), the “Chemical Engineers Congress”(Chemcon) occurs mostly in the month of december. This year the 73rd Annual Session of IIChE and Indian Chemical Engineering Congress, CHEMCON 2020 will be held during 27 – 30 December 2020 at Bhubaneswar, Odisha in the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology campus at Bhubaneswar.  The Central Theme of this year’s CHEMCON will be ‘Optimal Utilization of Mineral Resources’. They also roll out the designs for both of them but tooo lately, only a week before the actual event. The paper has to strictly adhereto their prescribed conditions. You can very well use this design when you design a poster, not just for chemcon but anywhere.

The 72nd edition of chemcon on 2019 was organised by IIT delhi, and was attended by about 700 delegates all around the world. There were about 300 paper presenrtations and 40 posters(Tougher to get into). Prizes are not awarded in this conference. There were many plenary lectures by top subject and matter experts with loads of information. The event occurs for 4-5 days with a fully packed schedule.

Be well prepared with your presentation or posters as the people attending will have a lot of questions about it. There are certain things to remember, as its a conference of higher order, they give certificate of presentation to only one of the person in the team. You can raise a request prior to the conference and confirm about this. But you will get a participation ceritificate. You will have pay for the accommodation and registration separately, food is complimentary.

We took the Garib Rath express to reach Delhi’s HH Nizammudin stn, which is a 28 hour journey from chennai (where I live). The college is about 6 kms from the station in a place called Hauz Khaz. The city of Delhi is soo great with lots of places to visit and explore. The Red fort, lotus temple, Qutb Minar, India Gate, National War memorial, Akshardam, The central scretariat, Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the crowded markets of Sarojini nagar, chandhini Chowk, chatta chowk are awesome. Agra is just at 2 hours drive from Delhi, where the beautiful Taj stands.

One can also experience the greatness of the Mughal empire and the rich Indian culture in Delhi. We also got to taste the Great delicacies like Akbari dishes and also the Chola Batura. The place was famous for shawls and jewellary, and what not.

It was an awesome experience and one should never miss a chance to attend these kind of conferences where we have both fun and knowledge gain.

The thing with page numbers in MS word😖!!

The formating option of the page numbers are not sooo easy in word, you can insert them with ease though.

In certain journals for publication of the articles, they require the first page to have the number in middle and following that then even pages on the left and odd page numbers on the right.

That can be done in the MS word by the following steps:

Goto Insert > Page Numbers > select the position your page number to be (bottom or top and the font and alignment)

Once the numbers are inserted, they are put either in the Header or the Footer based on your selection. Then to align them, you have to go to the header and footer menu. If its open, well and good, else double click on the page number.

The header and footer ribbon opens. Here check the “Different first page ” and “Different Odd & Even pages” boxes.

Now to shift the page number to the right corner, Bring the cursor before the number and press “tab” key from the keyboard. Now to shift the page number to the left corner, Bring the cursor before the number and press “backspace” key from the keyboard.

Shortcuts in MS Office

There is a lot of shortcuts key that you can use in MS Office in common, like;

Ctrl + A -> Select all

Ctrl + B -> Bold the selected text

Ctrl + C -> Copy the selected text

Ctrl + I -> Italize the selected text

Ctrl + S -> Save the document or presentation…

Ctrl + U -> Underline the selected text

Ctrl + V -> Paste the selected text

Ctrl + X -> Cut the selected text

Ctrl + Z -> This is the best one …. i think…. UNDO!

Ctrl + shift + > -> increase size of text

Ctrl + shift + < -> decrease size of text

Also to put a letter or text to subsrcipt:

Type it -> select it -> then press Ctrl + = (or) just press Ctrl + = and type the text, then re press the same think to get the things back to normal.

and to put it in as superscript:

do the same except press Ctrl + shift + =

Or you could very well use the Subscript(black box) and superscript(orange box) buutons in word.

UNinstall an owned app from windows store

Basically Microsoft store does not allow you to unistall or disown your app, that you installed. You cannot find it in the programs section of the control panel nor in the microsoft store .

You can only uninstall it either in the apps section from the settings menu in windows 8 and above.

It can also be directly from the start menu, the app is pinned to it by just right clicking it and clicking on uninstall.

MS word-Auto recovery

There are plenty a lot og features in MS word, but are not known to many and is often confusing. In my experience of using Word, here what I found out!

The most basic thing is to save your work, at least once in 5 minutes. Though there is an auto save option, always expect the unexpected the unexpected.

There is this Auto Recovery option in word, Which saves your work every 10 minutes and can be recovered in case of sudden a crash or battery loss… It generally pops up to the left side in the word document the next time you open it.

But, if this does not come up you can very well recover your file by going to File > Options > Save > AutoRecover file location.

You can go to this destination to access your file! You could also change the auto recovery time period too (the red box above)!
